Out of State Plates has two main objectives: inviting the best new voices in writing to talk about their craft and bolstering Providence’s reputation as a literary destination. Each reading is followed by a conversation with the author focused on their process. Our events are free and open to the public.
Out of State Plates is hosted by Sarah Frye. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in fiction and currently resides in Providence, where she is at work on a novel. You can reach her via the contact page.
This reading series is a labor of love.
Do I need to read the book before the event?
Nope. Because we focus on craft, the conversation should be engaging to anyone with an interest in writing or how writers think. And we’ll always try to avoid spoilers.
Will there be books for purchase at the event?
Yes. Twenty Stories will have books for sale the evening of the event and the author will be available for signing. You can also call ahead and reserve your copy to pick up as soon as the book is released or at the event. You can reach Twenty Stories at 401-216-7380
Have you thought about turning this into a podcast?
We’ve received this flattering suggestion many times. (Thanks, guys!) For now we’re going to keep it a live event. But if that changes we’ll let you know!
How often Will the reading Series take place?
Six times a year, but not necessarily every other month. Our schedule is subject to book tour schedules, author availability, and those holidays when Providence empties out because all the Rhode Islanders are at the beach.
how do you choose your authors?
There are currently four sets of criteria: the author is not from Rhode Island, they are a master of writing craft, they are enthusiastic about discussing their craft, and, finally, they fit snuggly in the Venn diagram between our aesthetic interests and what (we imagine) would fit with Twenty Stories’ current literary selections.
Will you have Poets? Creative Nonfiction?
this sounds perfect for me/the author i represent. Can I send you a galley?
Yes. Reach us via the Contact page.
